LOVE LETTERS
FILM ACTRESS TO PAN. VERDICT FOR £15,000. LOS I ANGELES, September 16. A jury of five women and seven men, after nine ballots to-day, awarded 75,000 dollars (£15,000 at par) damages against the noted screen star, Claire Windsor, after a trial lasting for three weeks, of a charge brought by the wife of a young San Francisco broker, Alfred Read, of alienating his affections. The verdict came as a surprise, in view of Read’s mother giving sensational evidence on the final day that her son was entirely to blame, and that be misled Claire Windsor; into believing that he and his wife were already apart men they were meeting. Read s wife divorced him last month. According to the jury, they were swayed by a- packet of 300 love letters written by defendant • The Judge told the jury that it was not a defence on defendant’s part to say she believed the Reads were not living together when her association with Read began.
