DEATH SENSE
ARGUMENT RECARDING SHEEZ' LONDON, September 19. The Secretary of the Performing 'Animals Defence League, Mr S. MacjiVlicliael, hotly denies an assertion by Professor Craig, principal of the Dublin Veterinary College, that sheep cannot think. Professor Craig said that it is not cruel to allow sheep to see others slaughtered, as the' sheep, is incapable of reasoning that it vd.ll shortly suffer similarly. Mr MacMiclmel recalls a visit to the “best-ordered slaughter-house in the world,” where sheep are stunned. ICvcry time the captive-bolt pistol was filed it made a slight “pop,” yet all the sheep made quick convulsive movements of fear, as instinct or intuition warneu them of approaching death. “Sheep are not stupid,” Mr MacMiehael says, “because they abstain from eating the flesh of their follow creatures, and when they arc dying they go into a corner without fuss, like gentlemen.”
