Byrd’s supply ship, Bear of Oakland, underwent its final preparations to-day, preparatory to its start for the South Polar regions to-morrow. The foodstuffs and scientific instruments were placed aboard, and the clearance papers were issued. The < :;pedition flagship, the Pacific Fir las been renamed the Jacob Rupert, in honour of, the New York . laxhail magnate, Mr Brewer, who is one of the expedition’s principal sponsors. Admiral Byrd will leave on the Jacob Ruppert in about a week. 3!e expects to overtake the Bear of <. akland long before she reaches 3.0 r base at Dunedin, which is expected tj require about two months.
