A fire occurred at Runanga last night at 9.15, when a five-roomed dwelling at the upper end of Ward Street was burnt to the ground. Owned by Mr T. E. Kennedy, the house was occupied by Mrs T. Chinn and family, all of whom were absent, visiting friends in the township at the time of the fire.

A fatal accident occurred at the Stockton mine, Westport yesterday the victim being Mr James Reid, an old employee of the Stockton Company. Reid was killed by a fall of coal in the south-west section of the mine. The late Mr Reid had worked at the Stockton Mine for the past 20 years. He had been an official of the Stockton Miners’ Union for some time past.

Cabled advice was received yesterday of the death of Mr Arthur .Ford, which had taken place at Melbourne. The deceased was formerly of Ross, and was a resident of Hokitika for a number of years, following the vocation of a carpenter. He leaves a wife and family of three children, three brothers (Mr Robert Ford of, Hokitika,' and Messrs Thomas and John Ford of Harilmni), and three sisters (Mrs G. McMillan of H'arihari, Mrs D. Gordon of Christchurch and Mrs J. C. Free of Lieeston.) Deceased paid a visit to the district about a year ago.

She has not yet regaineir consciousness. Mr It. Hazelhurst, the Canterbury representative footballer, who was injured in the same accident, continues 'to make progress towards recovery.
