STARS IN RETREAT
SCIENTISTS DISCOVERY LONDON, September 12. There are galaxies of stars outs’de our universe running away from us, Sir Arthur Eddington told the British Association for the Advancement of Science to-day. Ho added that the greater their distance the fast they moved. The maximum traceable stoeed is ‘1.5,000 miles a second. The stars are also retreating from each other. “Nobody is sure,” sa d Sir Arthur, “whether the universe is always ■ expanding or will continue to expand. .'Unknown circumstances might ten if ,v upset,, calculations. “If the theory that the universe began from a congested, mass is correct, ‘Jjke .universe would bo 200,000,000 years old, whereas the earth’s age is estimated to be at least 2.000,000,000 yea i s. “The late Lord Kelvin considered the earth was. 50,000,000 years old, hut we laugh at that to-day, and future scientists may similarly laugh at us.”
