Although their strength was heavily reduced by the loss of seven of the host players, five of them in the South Island team, Canterbury were able to withstand the challenge of South Canterbury for the Ranfurly Shield, today. The match was played in brilliant sunshine on a ground that was too hard for football. The standard of play was poor, but the game was so even that interest was kept alive until the find whistle. All the scoring was done in the first spell, Canterbury winning by 6 points (a tl’y and penalty goal) to a 3 points. try. . The attendance was less than 10.000.
South Canterbury scored first with a flukey try. With play in the Canterbury 20, the home team was peiril ised. and Provaii had a shot at goal from an easy position. Hawkes Bay defeated Poverty Bay in their annual Rugby fixture fit Napier to-day before a moderate attendance. - The play was not up to standard, though the conditions, were ideal. The home side . were definitely superior in the first spell. - The visitors improved after the interval. . Hawkes Bay scored five tries;, one being converted,' arid one field goal. Poverty Bay; got 1 three - tries,' one being converted.

AROKLAND, Sep. 23., /Auckland narrowly defeated the touring Wanganui Rugby team at Eden Park,- to-day. in a- game which resolved itself into a contest between the "local backs and visiting forwards. Frequent loose rushes by Wanganui pack swept hrough the Auckland, defence, but the visitors lacked. polish. Tries for Auckland were scored by Slyfield (2), iftedgeley, Ross and Townsend.
