While engaged in his work as machinist -at the “Grey River Argus” Office, yesterday morning, Mr L. Cooper had the top of the- index finger of his right had removed throught catching his hand in the cog of a wheel. He was given medical attention by Dr W. A. Bird.
On Thursday evening an incipient outbreak of fiiro was discovered in premises in Mewhera Quay, Greymcuth, occupied by Mr F. H. Hayes, house furnisher. The Fire Brigade was summoned, and they soon had the flames subdued. The fire originated behind the mantlepiece in the workshop, and wa-s confined to that room, little damage being done.

The first general meeting of the Franz Josef branch of the Women’s Institute was held at Waiho Gorge, on Thursday September 21. The first part of the meeting was devoted to enrollment of members and genera] business, after which Sister Gunn gave a most interesting and instructive- talk on First Aid in the Home. Mrs L. Gibb (president) gave a prize for an amusing guessing competition which was won by Mrs Peter Graham. A delicious supper given by the committee was then served to members and guests present.

The secretary of the local Unemployment Committee, acting under instructions, has notified all single men under. 50 years of age, on the County, Borough and Hospital Board No 5 lists, of vacancies at the Public Works camp on the Greymouth-Westport road. The men have been advised to notify the District Inspector of Factories at Greymouth if they -are prepared to accept the work and unless a satisfactory reason is forthcoming, the men will he barred from further relief. The Westland Mining Executive made representations to the- Unemployment Board in consequence of instructions affecting'the working of the gold-mining scheme in the district, and received a reply intimating that men actually’ engaged or who can conveniently be placed on prospecting, will not be called on to enter the relief camp. As additional men will require to he placed on the Humphries prospecting scheme this reply will he considered generally satisfactoiy.
