There was a steady downpour of rain during the night, with a heavy northwester blowing. After daylight iboth rain and wind stopped, the morning being cloudy and warm. There was a fair fresh in the river this morning, which should have an improving effect on the conditions of the bar.
An increase of four cases of infectious and other notifiable diseases was reported in the Canterbury and West Coast Health Districts for the week which ended at noon on Monday, ns compared with the previous week. Tlie total was 13, as follows Canterbury ; Scarlet Fever, six; tuberculosis, hour: pnemomc. influenza, 'one. West Coast: Scarlet fever, one;' dipthera, one. No deaths from any infectious or notifiable disease were reported in either district.
A Wellington correspondent states, early attention will be given by the Cabinet to the appointment of a successor to the High Commissioner in London, Sir Thomas Wilford, if such an appointment is necessary. At the wish of the Government, Sir Thomas’s term was extended at the end of 1932 for a further year, and this extension will expire .in December. Tller-e is an opinion that Sir Thomas may be asked to accept an extension of his t-erro for, yet another year, and that if he is unable to do so the Hon. R. Masters will most likely be his successor. During the tour from which he has just returned Mr Masters has made himself fully acquainted with! questions which come within the sphere of the High Commissioner’s duties, and he is considered a very suitable man for the office.
The movie hall at the Soldiers’ Hall to-niglit will be the great- attraction. and all traffic will gravitate that way. Elaborate preparations have been made for the occasion, and everything possible, will be done for the pleasure of patrons. A working bee fast night was engaged with the decorations, and special attention was devoted to the floor. The ladies committee is receiving much generous support, and the supper arrangements will be very complete. The orchestral band will be in a distinctive uniform, and will play throughout the night. For the supper interval the orchestra will be divided into two sections, so that there will be no lack of bright music throughout the evening. Patrons aj-e coming from afar, thus ensuring a very representative- Coast attendance, adding variety to the costuming in regard to which many notable characters will he depicted. There .is every promise of something of a record gathering, and the event should go down in local annals as one of the outstanding balls of the season.
