THE HOKITIKA CLUB. The annual meeting of the Hokitika Tennis Club was held last Friday evening when there was a good .attendance. The report stated that several home and home matches were played during the season with the G ir eymouth and United Clubs, and on each occasion the Hokitika players acquitted themselves well. The Club had also won the annual match against the combined clubs. Owing to bad weather, five rounds of matches for the Baird and Hayes Cups were unable to be completed. Two rounds wore finalised, and the 'successful players were ; Hayes Cup, Miss W. Stevenson; Baird Cup. Miss Davidson and Perry tied, and a p'Li.y off was necessary. The' club membership showed little change, and at the end of the season stood at 24 men. 36 ladies and 17 juniors. The committee had been negotiating wi;h the Borough Council regarding the lease ol a portion of the botanical garden site or Whitcombe Square, the approximate rental of either of which was £l3 10s per annum, but both areas would require a .good deal of expenditure on drainage alone. As the Club was in a good financial position, and the courts were in an exceptionally bad state of repair, it was Imperative that- some definite proposal should be arrived At.
The balance sheet showed that the season commenced with a credit of £176:,15s ild, and concluded,with ••a credit iof £2lB 13s.‘
The report and; balance sheet were adopted. The following officers were elected: — President, Mr C. H. Guthrey ; vicepresident, Mr H. F. Cooke; club captain, Mr P. Dougherty; secretary and treasurer, Mr L. Lar.combe; assistant secretary, M*r McCluskey ; auditor, Mr ■Cooke ; committee, Messrs McCluskey arid L. 'Gooch, Misses Stapleton, J Davidson and Knight. After considerable discussion, the committee 'was instructed to acquire a lease of three sections,- being part of Whitcombe -Square, ,at corner of Park rind Bealev-Streets. The committee was further authorised to spend £25 on the present courts. It was decided that.an.increase of 6s per annum be made on the 'subscriptions of...senior members, and that the ■Club supply:'a . pair of balls fpr. each court, on;Wednesday and Saturday afternoons of oaoh week. 'New members .were .appointed as fbll0:w j—f Mesdames Marshall and Bout-, ledge, Miss’ M. E. Anderson, Mr. IC. Higgins; juniors,, •E. Dowell, D.. Wallace and L. Jolley. ’The’ fixing of a date for opening day was left in the hands',of the committee. Votes of thanks were accorded to those who had assisted in contributing, to the ..paste success and enjoyment. In thie. exhibition doubles game opening the Pacific South West Tennis Championships on Friday, Perry (England) and vain Ryn were held to a draw by Satoh and Nunoi (japan). Perry and van Ryn won the first 6—o. The Japanese won the Second 17—15STEDMAN DEFEATED. LONDON, September 16. The German, D. Prenn, beat the New r Zealander, Stedman, in the semifinal of the Scottish Lowland Championship, 6—2, 6—2.
