Quist defeated Farnham Warriener 6/2, 6/1; and Turnbull defeated Robert Sanford 6/3, 6/4i Both opponents were local players. In the opening games both Australians found difficulty .in handling their shots on. the concrete courts. Turnbull found his opponent’s hard hounding service on the concrete somewhat difficult to "handle.

Due to the lateness of the Australians’ arrival from the Grand Canyon, they were given a “courtesy” win by default in the first round of the mixed doubles, in order to keep up the schedule. Quist is paired with Esther Bartosh (Los Angeles), and Turnbull with Josephine Cruiekshanks (Santa Anna), v
