It was generally agreed that the relief hoped for under the Borough Commissioner Apt had not been given. It was resolved by am overwhelming majority, as follows : “The ratepayers, having made an honest endeavouring to carry out their agreement with the representatives- of the Thames bondholders, and believin,g that the present burden of rates will be ruinous to Thames property -owners and to f'the security of the bondholders, resolvo to put their financial position before the Prime Minister and Cabinet, and earnestly pray that . . the Government will intervene nvth * view to assisting all parties, ~and immediately promote legislation appointing an independent tribunal to decide what' measure of relief can, be given in the present rating year, and what further relief should be given- for the -subsequent year and years.?’ ; - A petition for presentation .... to the Cabinet', in similar pterins,i ..wag largely signed. • : 'Mr Samuel promised every assistance to ■ alleviate the position, and to place the representations before Cabinet- and congratulated the ratepayers on their orderly discussion and absence of personal recriminations.
