A BISHOP’S HATES
; OUTSP.OKEN VIEWS EXPRESSED. A VICAR WHO LIKES LIPSTICK, Outspoken views expressed in England recently by a bishop and a vicar reveal that they do not see eye to eye on present-day habits. . ' The Bishop of Durham went so far as to object to clergymen smoking in the street. On the other, hand, the use of “make-up” by ■women’ was defended by the Rev: A. Wellesley Orr, vicar ot St. Paul’s Kingston Hill. Retorting to a headmaster’s criticism of women as being inartistic and impoetic, Mr Orr said : “I am bound to confess that in no other parish have l seen such.a, splash of artistic beauty as :i am privileged to see here. “L am compelled to admit that although some- of that beauty is not natural, . yet it is the result of the fact that a woman .is naturally artistic and, not wasting her ’ time competing with stupid men. upon canvas, in oils,- or water-colours, prefers to use the skin of her own face.
“All glory to the feminine sex for this. If perchance my own face prove unpleasing I can only hide it with a doormat ( of human hair, though the effect be inhuman. 'Women are the only true artists.” The Bishop of Durham, writing ol “Things which, my soul liateth,” condemns: Sham flowers under glass globes and earthenware monuments ,'in church, yards; Confetti in and about the entrances to churches; Posting names of preachers outside the churches, “Sometimes in gigantic letters;” Addresses at funerals designed to compliment the deceased and edify the mourners; Selecting psalms which few can find in time to join in singing them; Compliments to individuals in parish magazines;' Smoking by clergymen in the streets; Amatory letters torn into small pieces and orange neel in the bishop’s park.
