During the week the West Coast lias been experiencing fine weather, but there has been a decided opposite iu most parts of the Dominion. Welcome- rain came to Canterbury early in the week, which proved of great advantage to farmers in what had been a very parched district. There has been a succession of heavy blows along the east coast, and in some- places shipping has been held up.
The West Coast Herd Testing group will this year contain about 2000 cows. It will cover the same territory from Inanghua Junction to South Westland. There will be three testing officers this year, instead of four as last year, when the number of cows tested was close- upon 4000. It is the general opinion that once this season is -oast, the system will go ahead and that fanners will fully realise the necessity of testing. In years gone by, .the regular visits made by the Bishop of Christchurch to the Westland portion of the diocese were in most cases attended by adownpour of rain, flooded rivers and a general hold-up of traffic arrangements, until when the regular visit became due, “Bishop’s weather” came to be looked forward to as the natural outcome of the promised visit-. To-day we are to be favoured with a visit by the Bishop of Christchurch, a changed personage from the former one of the earlier -days. The weather now is fine and promising to continue, so it is to be honed that with the changed personnel, a change in the weather of former visits .will be experienced enabling tlie journey into South Westland to be taken under the best of conditions.

The past few weeks of fine spring weather has had a remarkably good effect on the farm lands of the district, and the paddocks have now a fine green appearance, the feed homing away in good style in most localities. Where top dressing has been indulged in this season or late last year, the growth is much more substantial and is supplying an answer of its own to the statement that it pays to top dress. The lambing season is now nearly over, and there should be some good returns. The weather has been very suitable for lambing this year and very few losses are reported, while- the flocks are looking in the best of condition. It has easily been the best season for years as far as the weather conditions are concerned. Cows are now coming in in increasing numbers, -and the dairy season gives every promise of being a- very successful one also. The herds have come through the winter well, and there is now a lot of feed (available. The improvement in the price of butter will also have a heartening effect on the industry.

Contrary to common belief the kiwi is by no means praptically extinct iff the North Island, and it i s reported that there are quite a number flf those wingless birds in the Tutira and Puketitjri districts, Hawke’s Bay. A Hawke’s Bay resident who was pigshooting at Tutira a few days ago saw, a kiwi which his dogs had disturbed. U-non giving chase he discovered a kiwi’s nest in a ,clump of manuka at the foot of a cliff. There were two eggs in it, which is most unusual, because the kiwi seldom lays more than one egg to hatch. This is so on account of the egg’s large size, being bigger than a duck’s egg. A very .successful banquet was held last evening by the Aill Saints’ Young Men’s Club in the Parish Hall-

The movie ball on Wednesday next is being organised as a benefit for the Westland Competitions Soviety. It is necessary to strengthen the finances in order that the annual festivals may be continued. These events are educational and entirely for the benefit of the rising generation, and the forthcoming function should ensure the' gathering being continued next year. The committee in charge carry out a self-imposed task and the burden should be lightened by the public assisting to assure the finance. For such a deserving object the appeal should- not be i n vain. Apart from the social value of the big event next Wednesday, at the Soldiers’ Hall, the occasion will supply an enjoyable measure of entertainment for patrons.
There is the promise of a fine array of fancy costumes, and it will be interesting to see many notabilities depicted as to the life. First class music will be contributed by the orchestra. The ladies committee meets finally on Monday evening to complete the internal arangements for the ball.
