TARIFF COMMISSION

THE DUTY ON MALT EXTRACT. (I‘er Preu Association — Copyright.} DUNEDIN, Sep, 18. At the Tariff Commission, the retention of the tariff of 20 per cent., or two pence a pound, on malt extract was claimed by the Dunedin Brewery Coinpuny and the Wilson Malt Extract C-'oin-pmiy. , Mr C. A. Wilson said that a. s dairy factory owners claimed their right to be regarded practically as a primary industry, so did the firms claim a similar right. It was unwise for the farmer to demand a. reduction of the duty on malt extract, which was going to penalise the New Zealand barley grower in favour of foreign grain. Witness took exception to a suggestion that New Zealand, extracts were lower in quality than imported extracts. .Ho proposed to submit- his extract for a comparative analysis with the English importation by an independent analyist. There was no hope of carrying on without a duty.
