Rumours that the exchange is coming down or off seems to be without foundation says the N.Z, “Financial Times, ’ Although freely mooted it is very difficult to conceive that New Zealand in the absence of Argentine, Australia and Denmark would make any radical exchange alteration. The latest advice is that the Argentine will probably pursue the American experiment <if inflation -and that default on the debt service on Government bond s is likely. In any -case exchange is likely to m°ve only 5 per cent, either way at a time and our view is that high exchange is here to stay indefinitely.
The organisers of the Movie Bdl report that many celebrities of Hollywood fame will be present at the benefit ball .at the Soldiers' Hall on Wednesday next. A notable visitor to Westland, and who is at present at the Franz Josef, is Mr Lincoln Ellsworth, the American explorer and loader of the Antarctic ex-' pedition in November. Air Ellsworth, flew across from Wigram yesterday in a machine piloted by Mr J. C. Mercer, and the flight to Wailio occupied just under two hours. Mr Ellsworth expressed great delight at the splendid trip across the Alps. It is his intention
to cross the ranges, via Graham’s Saddle, to the Hermitage at Mt. Cook. Mr Mercer returned to Hokitika at 7 o’clock this morning with a passenger, from Wailio, and later flew hack to Okuru with Mr Alan Cron, who has returned from Christchurch where lie has completed a course of flying instruction at Wigram.
