. Godwits have started to return to New .Zealand alter their long .annual migration -to .Siberia, and already numbers have been seen i* l ’ the Manukttu 'Harbour, They are apparently -an advance guard for?; larger flocks. It is usual for the godwits to appear in large numbers in October, migration in normal years being completed by the end of Novenibor. In several week’s time it is probable that thousands of the birds will be gathered on the mudflats of the West Coast harbours and ■oilier favoured spots.
Monday last was the fifth anniversary of the first trans-Tasman flight, in the. famous monoplane*: Southern Gross. Sir Charles Kingsfprd Smith and three companions .left Sydney *on 'September 10 and landed at Christchurclv the next day, their machine covering the distance of- 1650 miles in 14 hours 25 minutes.. The Southern Cross made ,a second flight- to New Zealand on January 11 of the present year, the machine travelling from. Gerringong Beach, New 'South.Wales; to New Plymouth. The crossing of the Tasman occupied 14 hours 10 minutes on that occasion. Return flights to Australia, were made by Sir Charles and his companions after both ventures.
The fine-surf running on the Takapuna Beach last Monday at the height of the gale proved a strong attraction to a young man, who took his early season plunge fully dressed. He walked nearly to the water’s edge and then sat down, and the next ware swept clean over him. Thtis apparently satisfied him, for he immediately left the water as unconcernedly, as he had entered it and walked from the beach. Onlookers,, who at first imagined they were witnessing the first stage of a tragedy, had. no time to inquire whether the unusual proceeding was the outcome of a bet or the impulsive action of ag ardent surfer.
