The ‘‘amazing” series of fire insurance frauds mentioned in the Sydney cable probably refer to the operations of a gang of five men in several centres, including Auckland,- in 191618. In . small sums they ; defrauded the insurance companies of a. substantial 'amount. The gang mould re~t an empty house and furnish it with new furniture, which would be insured .for perhaps- £IOO. The furniture would then be removed to another empty house rented by a second -member of the gang and again insured. Each time it was removed it-would be replaced by a few pounds’ worth of second-hand articles and then the houses would be fired and a claim made for the insurance. One of the gang -wtfah arrested .and 'dent ’to g *ir>l fol- - fire to a shop. Cases of goods wlvch he had forwarded from one town to another were found to comma pieces of rock.
