WEST COAST .CHALLENGE. The West Coast challenge for- the Ranfurly Shield against the holders/ the Canterbury Union, will fie played at Lancaster Park on Saturday afternoon next. There promises to be a large influx of WeSt Coaster s to Christchurch by the special train on Friday night, while the team leave on Thursday morning. Twenty players have been chosen to make the journey to Christchurch, ‘and the only addition to those previously--*' selected is that F. Freitas is' included in the number, while the team will not be selected till Friday night. Report has it that several members are suffering from minor injuries, but it is to bs hoped that they will all be fit enough to give of their best, •' if Selected to play. The Coast team hag played three games this season and have been successful though the last two games were close hard ones. The forwards can be depended upon to .put up a great fight, but the backs generally will have to come out of their ' shell with the best they have, if they are to lower Canterbury colours. The Canterbury team has had three games for the 'Shield,'" two being easy ones against' Ashburton and Southland, while Otago lost week forced them to give of their best. to .secure ja 'victory. The', game should prove ft well contested one, but the Coast backs need to give more thrust to their attack than they have in their last two matches -if they are to be rewarded with a win,' an outcome that woud give delight ‘to all followers' of the game on this side of the" ranges. WESTLAND BUB-UNION MEETING The Westtaira Rugby Sub-Union met last evening, there . being present Messrs J. C. Stafford (president), J. McGallum, J. L. Menzies, F. MoGregj or, A. Cutbush, D. R. Dowell, W. Stop- ! forth, A. Thompson, and E. W] ! Heenan. 1 The West Coast Union advised that the Coast v. Buller match would be played at Hokitika on September 23. The Ross Club '\v'rote in connection with its match with Kiwi, also noti- . fying that Kind juniors mad not played at Ross this season. The matter was deferred till next meeting. A petition, signed- by a number of Hokitika business - people, was received asking that an endeavour be made to have next" Saturday proclaimed a ptiblic holiday, in view of ‘the large exodons of residents from here to witness the Coast v .Canterbury match at Christchurch. On the motion of the president, it was decided that a<deputation consisting of Messrs Dowell, Thompson, Stopforth and Heenan wait on the Mayor in furtherance of the request, and also to ask that business people be requested to observe Friday evening -j as late night,. In reply to the Ross Club,. it was decided, in view of forthcoming fixtures, to suggest September 16 as a suitable date for the seven-a-side tournament at Ross. A motion of Sympathy with Mr A. H. Dawn in his indisposition was passed by the meeting, and it was decided that a letter be sent expressing the wish for a speedy recovery.
