MOTOR TRADE

REPLY TO DEPUTATION

{Per Press Association — Copyrykt.)

WELLINGTON, August 28'

Mr R. Me Keen, M.P., who introduced a recent deputation to the Labour Minister, Hon. A. Hamilton, from the motor trade union protesting against the under which examinations .for moto r mechanics are conducted by the motor trade Association, has received the ' following letter from the Minister of Justice, Hon. J. A. Cobbe My. colleague, the Hon. Minister ol Labour, has passed on to me representations made by. a deputation from the motor trade union on July 27. I have had ■ careful inquiries made into the jsu'bject. The matter was discussed with particular reference to the suggestion that .the Motor Tvade Association had committed false pretence in accepting examination and certificate fees from members of the union introduced-% you. I find that your conclusions have been drawn somewhat prematurely ahd that the Motor Trade Association is even now organising a scheme .for improvement of the sfandaid of- the trial. This should be for ,mutual benefit of motor' vehicle owners, gatago proprietors and . those employed in garages. Briefly, the idea is to induce motor- mechanics to qualify ‘to pas« a n efficiency test, -Garages . employing a feertain' quota, of 'duly qualified ‘men and whose-shop.- equipment .is up to a certa-W standard,, will be- certificated. Motor union's will be advised as. to garages that are- certificated and 1 - -it is contemplated that their guaranteed efficiency will command a preference of support. Competition will ultimately require nil garages to employ certificated men, and thereby bring about ’.a general raising of the quality of the work done, and incidental!v Mistily a higher standard of charges, which will in’turn enable a higher wage scale to be piid. I have had papers and' blank certificates relating to the. whole plan of the scheme submitted to me and I think the .'idea is a commendable one, but it is still iu an stage and -it i,s too early yet to pass • judgment upon its- manner "61 working out in practice. j ’ • V
