ORDEAL AT SEA

Six occupants of a motor-boat had a thrilling ordeal when their engine broke down in a rough sea off Southbourne, Sussex, recently. For some time they were in danger of being swamped, but eventually they attracted the attention of the pleasure steamer Lorna Boone, which took them in tow. Hundreds of holiday-makers on the steamer witnessed the rescue.
The motor-boat was afterwards taken in tow by the Swanage lifeboat, and the occupants were safely landed at Poole Harbour. They were Mr J. W. Brook, Mrs C’oysh and Mrs Berkeley, all of Clielsea, with a crew of three. They had been staying at Littlehampton, and chartered the boat to take them to Poole, Dorset. Encountering rough weather, they put into' Yarmouth, Isle of Wight. Soon after the party had resumed its journey the engine of the boat broke clown. Repairs were carried out, but the weather turned rough and the engine stopped again.. The boat drifted all day, attempts't c > anchor having to be abandoned owing to the clanger of the boat being swamped. One of the men used his shirt, hoisted on an o al ', as a signal of distress, and the women used mirrors from their handbags, flashing them in the sun in the hope cf attracting the 1 , attention of vessels passing in the Solent. It was these flashes which attracted the Lorna Doone, which went out of her course and took them in tow In the meantime the coastguard at Southbourne.had called o ut the Swanage lifeboat, .which arrived later and took the party over from the Lorna Doone and towed them safely into harbour. The two women stated that they had been badly scared by their help- j less plight in the rough.sea, and were drenched to the skin by spray and vain. 1
