I his completes the total requirements fo r the present hatching season at Lake Kanieri. A total of 800,000 ova has been purchased, all of brown trout and when ready, will be liberated in the Westland Acclimatisation Society’s district.

Half of this year’s supply was procured from the North Canterbury Society’s hatchery, and half from the , Southland Society. Up to the present j a total, of 250,000' fry from the ova ■ Isocifred from Canterbury, lias been liberated, and a noticeable feature this year lias been the great improvement in the condition of the fry, as compared with that of previous years. Whether this fact is due to the change in j the locality of the North Canterbury’s I hatchery or whether it is due to the ! condition of the parent fish is problematical, but a decided improvement is evident this year. The ova from the ..Southland Society is usually in splendid condition, and the same 'applies this year. It is pleasing to note the care and despatch of the various consignments by the Railway Department, 'The previous boxes of ova were consigned from Invercargill by the first express on a Friday morning and arrived in Hokitika by the 9 a.m. train on the 'Saturday, demonstrating the excellent service rendered to-the community by the railways.
