METER FRAUDS
HALFPENCE FOR shillings.

As the result . of inserting, halfpennies into a gas meter, instead of shillings, a young woman was charged to-day with stealing gas. The offence took place at Wanganui. The meter was read after she left, and when she was located she said that she h®d used halfpennies because she was short of cash at the time. She bad intended to pay. 'the money owing. The Magistrate said that, in view' of the Probation Officer’s report, in which- it wa*j stated that th© woman was in very poor circumstances, 'he would admit her to probation for twelve months, and-would order restitution. An order was made suppressing her name.
