Canterbury defeated Otago, the New Zealand Cup holders by 18 to 11 after a fast game, in the basketball tournament this morning. Poverty Bay easily defeated Marlborough 27 1 to 16. South Canterbury 17,.defeated Manawatu 11; Wellington by at Hawkes Bay 19—10. , The defeated teams .in each Instance showed improved play, but were unable to outlast the, vigorous play of their opponents. Auckland secured the lead in. the first grade -ag the result of their defeat of Southland this morning. I,n the second grade, three teams retain an unbeaten record, Waikato, Poverty Bay and South Canterbury. In the . Auckland—Southland match a. keen.game resulted in a win for. the.
