BUDDHISM
ITS REVIVAL IN ASIA,
AMSTERDAM, August 12.
Cables received from the Dutch East Indies state that Buddhism is.at present .in a state of agitated upheaval. “Far-reachng effects on intellectual life and political conditions throughout Asia are almost.certain- to follow,” they add. , “Confusion in China, unrest in India and rabid nationalism in- .the Dutch East Indies colonies have brought about a state of high tension that demands careful study by the European Powers concerned. “The most significant feature of the whole movement is that some time ago the Pantchen Lamia-, the Priest-god, and most mysterious figure in Asia, left;' his monastery in- the heights of ’Tibet, vhnd proceeded to Peiping, where he intends to take over the leadership qf Buddhism throughout the world. “All Buddhist tribes .and people of the Far. East are said to be in a state of religious fervour awaiting the expected return of Buddha, This belief in the reincarnation of. Buddha has had an enormous influence on all Buddhists in Asia, and this may easily prove to be the initial stage of a cast religious revival throughout the Continent exercising profound effects on the course oft world- history.
