AUCKLAND, August 24
A holocaust was, risked in the Town Hall on the evening of August 8, according to Fire Superintendent IV. L. Wilson. He reported to the Fire Board that at about 9.30 p.ni. he was called to the Town Hall where a back-to-cbildbood ball was being held. The conditions were chaotic, the building being a seething mass of humanity, with passageways non-existent. The nature of the decorations, flimsy dress materials, and indiscriminate smoking could at any moment have precipated an appalling calamity. The conditions were .a flagrant breach of the by-laws, and he asked for immediate action to prevent; a possible recurrence.
The chairman of the Fire Board said that the position had got beyond control.
Jn discussion it was pointed out that the City Council controlled the Hall, and would have to prosecute itself for any breach,
It was decided to forward to the City Council a copy.of Hr Wilson’s report, with a covering letter deploring the position, and expressing hope that it would not arise again,
