Brick works. —About a dozen men 01more arc now employed on tlic brick works at Hau Hau. One party under Mr Brisk, the manager, is engaged in clearing a site on the top of the bill for the works, while another party under Mr J. Nightingale is engaged on the road construction, and good progress is being made.

Montezuma Beach.—Mr Carter and his staff are making good progress with the eojuipment of the beach claim on the Montezuma beach, North Hokitika. The whole of the machinery is expected to be installed this week, and a trial run will take place shortly afterward. The proposed working of the sea beaches should excite a good deal of local ini terest.

ltoad Construction.—According to tlie Mines Department statement, the following was the expenditure last financial year by the Department for the construction of roads on the West Coast:—Westland County £6857; Buller £5760; Inangahua £3276; Grey £2091; Brunner Borough £254; Ross Borough £241. The Westland County expenditure was als 0 the highest for the. whole Dominion.

Education report.—lnspector Morton submitted his report to the Westland Education Board at its last meeting regarding his visit to South Westland schools. The report stated inter alia: Mahitahi—T'ho school has not made good progress siuco my last visit. While thp teacher’s;experience is limited, this fact should not lead to tho neglect of instruction which has occurred in regard to history, needlework and geography. Bruce Bay—l found that the teacher had been absent for two months without the direct sanction of tho Board. The pupils’ written work had deteriorated and no record of tests during the present year had been kep>. Other conditions also had caused him to refrain from authorising the engagement of the temporary teacher. Karan-garua-—Very little progress made; teacher’s tests not marked in such a way as to bo of value; teacher young and not lully qualified; too little interest and application. Cook’s River.—Well conducted. Okarito—Good progress in instruction, discipline good. Waitangi —lnstruction progress somewhat slow. Inter Wanganui.—Progress only' fair. Jackson.—Progress and discipline good. Dredging returns.—Workshop (128 hrs) 1350 z ; Paetolus 11. (130 hours) 38 oz; Pactorus I. (llOhrs) 19oz.
