CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 21

Forty men who were to go to tile relief c-amp at Ashley. this .morning) refused to^leave., a iffiptiesj, against the withdrawal of the bus advice for them between the city ana the camp. The men concerned waited oil Mr Bailey, officer in charge of the Labour Department, at .Christchurch, with a request that they he transferred to another job if the bus service was not restored, Mr Bailey told the men that unless they went to the camp and put in a week’s work, they would be treated as voluntary unemployed,,, and would receive no assistance.

The men refused to go. Their complaint was that the bus fares last week cost them 11s, or Is 10d a day, whereas the transport allowance made for them was only Is a day. The men declined, the alternative, that already had been accepted by .some workers, of going into camp at Ashley and remain-' ing there. TIMARIJ PROPOSAL REJECTED.

TIMARU, August 21

By eight votes to six, to-night, the Timaru Employment Committee rejected a proposal by Mr H. G. Naylor to recommend to the Government the payment of sustenance, and the ' consideration of an unemployment insurance scheme in preference ,to the present system of relief work.
