At the inquest held at Greymoutn yesterday on the death of David S. Williams, in his evidence Herbert O’Brien, leading bushman employed by the ,Ncw - Forest (Sawmills, stated that the men had been en-
gaged Gii Friday last, in falling bush and hauling logs, At about 10 a,m, a log was being hauled and witness was standing close t<> it, Williams being about live yards behind him. Williams had an axe in his hand. The log being hauled, struck a dry sapling, which came back where witness and Williams were working. Witness turned when he heard deceased call, and saw Williams with his hands up, and the axe dropping to the ground. Williams had attempted to shield himself, but the limb had driven the axe into the back of his head. Witness went to him and found him in an unconscious condition. Witness assisted to have him removed to the Grey River Hospital. Deceased had been a competent bushman, and was in good health. Witness had been in charge of the gang. He thought Williams was in the safest place of any of the others, as he was standing behind a tree stump. It was purely an accident. After hearing medical evdence Coroner Meldrum returned a verdict. “That the deceased, David Seddon Williams, came to his death in the Grey River Hospital on August 19, 1933, from fracture of the skud, caused on the previous day at the New Forest Sawmill, at Nelson Creek, by a broken sapling accidently falling on him and driving the blade of an axe into'his skull.”
