PLACE IX FILTHY CONDITION

CHRISTCHURCH, August 16 Indignation at the condition of the 'Cawingion Hut was expressed by members of , a party which .made a trip to the hut 'recently.

‘‘The place was in a filthy condition,' - said one. “Old food and rubbish-were strewn about; dirty plates and eating utopsijs were thrown carelessly on the table, while, the pots and pans were grimy and covered with rust.”, v .

What . made the matter , more serious, however, he continued, was that iiiearly all the reserve food ,'Supply had been consumed. This meant, that ■any parity whioli happened to ,be Snowed,, in or weather bound for any length of time would have suffered through lack of food. It was L>r of this sort that the resepve .supply of food was kept .at the hut.

Members of the party expressed the opinion that deerstalkers were to blame for the condition of the hut and supplies. Parties of deerstalkers regularly stayed at the hue, which w- R the property of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club, but it was customary •for them to obtain permission first pome of these parties, ' ‘however, did .not obtain the necessary permission before staying at. the hut, and, had lived on the. provisions uhich were kept for emergencies only. Some deerstalkers. it w stated, had moved out just jbefore the climbers arrived.
