NECESSITOUS CASES 'AT GISBORNE
APPEAL TO THE MINISTER
GISBORNE, August 17
Reference to 'numerous necessitous oaseg in Gisborne was made at the ■meeting of the Cook Hospital Board, to-dav. The chairman, Mr M. R. Trafford, stated a deputation of fifty men had waited ora the Board intimating that they were absolutely destitute on account of the Unemployment Board not giving them work in the stand down week, which in Gisborne, is every alternate week. These men, stated the chairman, were only allowed to earn an average of IPs 9d per week for married men, and 9s a week for single men. After discussion, it was decided to send, a telegram to the Minister of Unemployment, urging that an allocation he made to Gisborne so that relief men will receive at least one day’s work in the stand down week, as the Hospital Board cannot accept the responsibility of those men. no provision .being made in i>3 estimates for lit men.
