SEVERE STORMS IN JAMAICA
WIDESPRE’|D DAMAGE RESULTS
KINGSTON (Jamaica), August 17
Seventy persons were’ drowned' today by floods' in the- city "and parishes of St. Thomas, St. Katherine, and St.' Mary, following on a s:oim. The damage is estimated at two million dollars.
Bridges and 'buildings were swept away, and banana plantations were levelled. The storm lasted six hours. It is' described at the worst in 80 years. Water rose as high' as six feet in: the streets, end rushed through the dwellings, washing .away many of the occupants who were trapped in them.
