S.Mi, at' the Magistrate’s Court on a man who pleaded guilty to a charge of taking or killing opossums: at Karori without a license. The head ranger of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society said that defendant. who was an experienced trap- • pei- held a permit to trap opossums on his father’s property. Tile licence was granted without any cost to the holder, but it did not allow the trapper to trap on other properties. Toe defendant, sheltering under this per-, mit, liad trapped on.an adjoining property. Four opossums had been killed: and 11 traps had been set. A young man was . convicted and ordered to pay costs on a similar charge. This defendant was also trapping at Karori. One trap only was found, and he had three opossums in his possession. “I do not think he is an experienced trapper,” said the ranger. “I think he was trying to find out if there were any opossums there.” The defendant said he had been unemployed - for 12' months, and- liad been trapping in order to-pass, the time.

Another defendant, who had a permit to kill opossums on his father’s property, was fined £4 for trapping the animals in a forest reserve. The ranger said that this case was of a more serious type.
