MOTHERS’ UNION

ANNUAL FESTIVAL YESTERDAY

The Annual West 1 Coast festival of the Mothers’ Union was held yesterday at Greymouth, when members were present from Hokitika, Kumara, Otira and Grevmouth, about 130 in all. On arrival they were welcomed at Holy Trinity Hall, and then proceeded to church fo r their corporate communion. The service was conducted by the Rev. Archdeacon Jermyn, assisted by the Rev. H. J. W. Knights. The Rev H. S. Hamilton, of Kumara, and the Rev. W. Beaumont, of Cobden, • were also present.

The address was given by Captain S. R. Banyarcl of the Church Army, on “the marks of a Christian,” which he described as “love, self-denial, fruitbearing and courage.” After church, lunch was provided by the Grevmouth branch at Herb. Mobre’u the Archdeacon being chairman. The usual toasts were honoured, and each branch, through its representative, returned thanks for hospitality. Miss Spencer-Smith, head of St. Faith’s House of Sacred Learning wais welcomed as" speaker for the, a'fterpoon, and Captain Banyard was l tendered birthday greetings' with' a, Maori welcome, heere mai, rangatira. ldrilii,' ake ake kai kaha. Various photographs were taken of the party before the commencement of the afternoon’s proceedings, at which .Migg Spencer-Smith gave a stirring address on the lasting influence of home life', and the tremendous responsibility which this factorentailed on tire mothers of the race. -A musical programme followed with afternoon tea, and the visitors .then departed to catch the afternoon train with very happy memories of a deeply inspiring day. ■ | y
