The ball travelled up and down I he field till time was called with Ceast victois ‘by 16 to 11. Tlie game .proved a hard one throughout. ’ Coast forwards proved a fine combination and they secured the ball in the scrum on a large majority of occasions, havingj almost a monopoly in the enk first spell. Agnin s t their heavier op-j pcheats they packed and pushed far bette,. and hi the line out the play was about even. The game wa s of a more solid than brilliant nature. The Coaist- backs failed to handle as well as’.they (should, W. Hughes being the exception:- Feng and Taafe -made veryj few attempts to go up the field, and j the across;the‘field passing gained veryj liLtle’groiind on most, occasions. Tn the ( early (.stages both -Schroder and Martyn j handled ‘bady, but they improved as.
the game,".wore on. ■ With the ball in possession for most of the game Coast ■baickß proved very disappointing. ■ The Nelson : f ijackg had - very little of ; thq ball; in the . .game," but they made fay better u's? of their, opportunities and their aftack . bad far more danger in it than t-hat of. their opponents, while 'tjieir line kicking :^vas' a decided feature. The heavy- Nelson pack stood up - well tQ their .work, but'they Were more than, held up by. the Coast pack. Glover, the Nelson 'custodian,"-showed to bette r advantage, than Gilbert, while the Nelson centre captain, had a distinct advantage ' over "the Coast captain on' the day’s plajjr; The Coast had the better of the play thanks to the fine work of their forwards gird the genre represents about the difference on the day’s play.
Mr C. lSi Crawford of Christchurch was referee.
