Great loss of life and tremendous damage have been caused in Ruthenia by the overflowing of the River TheisS. Fifty persons are missing and it is feared that all have been drowned.
In the village of Vylok 250 o l[ t of a total of 550 houses have been destroyed by raging torrents. Five hundred Jewish inhabitants refused to leave the village, and gathered in the
synagogue in order to avert a catastrophe by prayer. Gendarmes finally shepherded them into a safe place. The postmaster Ftuck to his post throughout the night, calling for aid by telephone and telegraph. According to his latest report, he was standing with a telephone in his hand on a chair placed on a table and .the water was up to his chest. The floods began to recede late this afternoon.
