BIG TUNNEL AT CHARLESTON

WESTPORT, July 27

Yestetday afternoon the' contractors Messrs Lowther and Party, for the Charleston Slucing Coy’s, tunnel at Croiiinvilie, finished the job. The drive is 2620 feet long. .Its dimensir.ns are 7ft ; by 4ft and it was- driven in eighteen weeks. This is a record for. a blue reef tunnel- in the Duller district, - and probably for New Zealand. The rapid driving was made possible by the fact that an ample water supply,. under pressure, was available.

MAINTENANCE CASE SETTLED

NAPIER, July 28,

A settlement was announced by counsel.. this morning, when an action for maintenance by Sarah (Mary Ann Hart '.-./gainst Frederick John Hart, -winner of the “Luck at Last” iart union, was called. It was stated that Hart has agreed to pay £2 a, week nyiintenance for his wife'and £SO past maintenance, 'also to deposit a £2OO security with the Public Trustee.

Action by the . secretary of the children’s home was also called, counsel stating that Hart had, agreed to pay .the sum of £196 6s owing in respect of"his three children.
