WELLINGTON*, July 27
A general statement by.the Nctv.- Zealand Woollen Mill Owners’ Association wars submitted to the Tariff Commission to-di\y. It is a- very lengthy document,. which concludes with a summary in which it is submitted that the liuance seliedulcis in the statement show it is imperative to maintain the present duties on textiles over a certain value on underwear, hosiery, and yarns and to increase the duties bv others means;-or in combination with ad.valorem, on materials made from shoddy. or mungo. That the industry is of considerable value to the revenue cf -New Zealand in money, and wages after allowing for all reductions are 54 per cent higher than the wages in the United Kingdom; that in the event of a reduction being made in the tariff, such would lead to a reduction of output and tend to create, further unemployment; that the industry is a key industry and is adding to the national wealth of the country, that the Now Zealand woollen industry is comparable to British industries; thatthe individual mill in New Zealand, as opposed to rationalised mills in circumstances in which we are placed, •is the best unit to conduct' the manufacture of woollen goods on economic and efficient lines; that internal competition will a fjord the greatest protection to the buying public; that the givneral tariff ; on foreign woollen goods, should lie increased, with the object of diverting our surplus requirements ill woollen goods to the United Kingdom.
