MR COATES’ 'STATEMENT

The point that the. time wa s opportune when a .complete and impartial survey into 'local government in New (Zealand could he carried out, was stressed by the acting-Prime Minister, Mr 'Coates, when speaking at the Counties’ Association luncheon to-day. Mr Coates -emphasised there wcis a burden, of charge on New Zealand.s .main industry, that- of farming. He said .jt was a duty to -see that the results of. the Government's deliberations were given efi'eirt and were n,s economic as they could possibly be. There Wixj room for the elimination (of quite -a number of -minor local authorities.
• Vsr Coates )said that he and .his colleagues had been discussing this question of local body government, and within ia short time, he hoped to he able to' make a definite announcement as to , the form which an inquiry would take. This inquiry would not be long now. ..•>■•
