WAGES IN U.S.A.

SWEAT SHOP SYSTEM AGITATION. NEW' YORK, July 25. The problem of “sweat shop wages for women has been taken up in Illinois by Governor Henry Horner who told the Illinois Joint Committee on Industrial Standards that- he will personally urge the passage of a Bill to establish a minimum wage commission. , Following a study of wage abuses in Chicago, the joint committee, composed of-- representatives of civic,; religious and trade organisations, went to the capital to urge State legislative action to < ensure a living wage for women in industry and business. (They found, that Governor Horner had already taken steps towards such action, said ATrp- Frank It. Halas, president of the Ulinios State Trade Union League, an organisation of women’s unions. When told that the jointcommittee had drawn up‘.a Bill modelled after the New • York- law., hut. adapted to Illinois conditions, Governor Horner agreed to consider making this proposed Bill an Administration measure, said Airs Halas. \Suqh action by -the Governor, who is a.member of the majority party in the State Legislature,'is very encouraging to • those who • are convinced that women workers, need some kind of safeguard against unreasonably low wages, said Mrs Halas.
