According to a letter received from South Africa by Senator Guthrie, the conditions there are now desperate, owing to a prolonged drought. The loss of sheep has reached quite twelve millions.
Men of wealth a few years ago are now ruined.
In South Africa, farms are now being sold at the rate of one shilling per morgen. , The morgen equals one and a-half acres.
The dairy cattle are unsaleable, and feed for stock is unprocurable.
