LATE LOCALS
Included in the catch of the Silver Bern trawler yesterday, caught with a line, wa,s a fish over five feet in length, and some six. inches in depth, and not 1-J inches in thickness at its widest part, tapering away to a fine tail. The outstanding feature of the fish is the. abnormal gize of the eyes, about the size of a calf’s eyes. The fish is of o bright silvery hue, and is stated to he rt 'frost'"fish, a rare delicacy. Tt is unusual for the fish to be caught with a hook, in most instances the fish being found washed, tin on a beach.
Marking the conclusion of the Church Army’s mission in Westland, 'there was a very large attendance at All Saint’s Church last evening, the building being packed. Captain: Beck conducted the singing and gave an address, in which he made an appeal to the congregation to ■' make the great decision. At the dose of ’the service lie invited members to make their witness for Christ and to come to- tho altar rails, thirty-two responding. The Rev. H. J. W. Knights and Sis- 1 ter North conducted the opening and closing mayors respectively. A vocal solo, “There is a Green Hill,” was contributed bv Miss A. Lynn.
Many former pupils of Hokitika District High School, and other friende will regret to hear of the- death .of Mr Thomas Henry Gill, which took place at his residence Khandallah, Wellington on. Tuesday of last week, in his 73rd year. The • late Mr Gill came to New Zealand in 1882. After teaching for a number of years at Oamaru and Caversliam, be was appointed rector of Hokitika District High School, in the latte: nineties, a position be filled with distinction and satisfaction t-o all. While here lie took a keen interest in sporting circles and was a well-known rugby referee for several years. Later Mr Gill removed to 'Wellington, and was for nine years, stationed at Newtown. Mr Gill was then appointed inspector of- high schools, which position he held for some years. He subsequently practised as a. solicitor.,, and lie acted, as ’registrar of, Scots-. Collega- for two years. Mr Gill was a- member of. the- Wellington Hospital Board for four years. He was elected president of , die New Zealand Educational Institute for term.; Mr Gill was an elder of St.. John’, 3 Presbyterian Ghurch for many years, and war, much interested,in Sunday school work. Tho late Mr 'Gill is survived by bis widow ,two daughters —Mrs D. Cameron (New Plymouth! and Mrs W. 11. Stain ton- and one son. Mr Arthur Gill.
