Fire Board Chairman.—At a special meeting of the Fire Board, Mr J. Mcßeath wars appointed night watchman. Twenty-eight applications for the posit ion were received as follow: Messrs Mcßeath, M. Cain, G. Anderson, R. Bennetts, C. E. Appleton, 0. Hegan, W. Pascoe, W. 11. Teague, G. Adamson. T. Stickle, W. A. Lctdie, J. A. Geise, R. Kirkwood, C. E. Gibbons, W. Howat, R. Parkinson ,(Greymonth), J. Rooney, IV. Reid, S. H. Clarke, W. Wallace, J. O’Brien, B. Lawson. IV. McNeil, T. E. McMahon, IV. O’Donnell, J. Millner, H. McArtney, and .J. J. Williams. Social Guild.—A most successful evening wae spent in All 'Saints’ Hall this week when a progressive euchre tournament was held under the auspices of the Hokitika Social Guild, The prize winners were Misses T. Bock and E. Harvey, and Messrs J. Tooliey and M. Keech. The committee who successfully arranged the function wer-e Mesdames Boyes, Barrett, Mcßeath, Bennett, Misses Holniee, Allen (2), Pfeifer, Thompson and Dale.

Hockey.—The following Westland players have been included in the West Const hockey team to play against Bullin' next week:—Folley, Cameron, Fair, Lyons, Kerr and Walker (Hokitika), Owens and Shaw (Kanieri).

Rallied. —The Public Hall, Kanieri was well filled when the Bishop of Christchurch gave a lecture on the life of Charles Dickens. This was preceded by a short programme of social items by Misses Michel, Day and Spence, Messrs Bray, Coulson, and the Rev. E. D. Rice. At the conclusion the visitor, 3 were entertained at supper by Mrs Head . Timber Slump.—While on his way into town, Mr T. IV. Bruce, County Chairman, was intercepted by the Ruatapu Sawmillers, and the eeriousnesg of the timber slump, as it affected the local .mills, was brought under his notice. As a result of the reoreseintations made, Mr 'Bruce despatched a telegram to Mr Tlios Seddon, advising that the lluatapu and Mananui mills had shut down owing to shortage of orders through the importation of Oregon, arid urged that the duty on Oregon be iiiceased. Okarito Harbour.—A largely signed petition has been sent to Mr Secldon, Member for Westland, for' presentation to the lit. Hon, the Premier, urging the Government to make adequate provision this session for the improvement of the port of Okarito. The petition was signed by the residents of South Westland, and by the business people of Ross and Hokitika. Trade, in Hokitika.—The July Journal of Labour reports as follows on Hokitika trade and business • Building, very brisk, all hands having plenty of work; engineering, 'busy; bootmakers and tailors, lully occupied; retail business, very satisfactory; blacksmiths, wheelwrights, plumbers, tinsmiths and painters,have plenty of work to keep them engaged. The sawmillers still keep up a large output. There were no applicants for work during the month. Arbor Day.—To-morrow is Arbor Day. The local celebration will consist of planting trees at the Free Library at 10 o’clock, and later at the foot of Cemetery Hill. The .Government offices will observe a holiday. The committee acknowledge with thanks donations of trees from Mesdames J. Holmes, and J. D. Allen, and Messrs J. Renton, senv., and 11. M. Crawford.
