AUCKLAND, July 18
The refusal of the Crown to accept responsibility for payment of rates on properties’in which is is interested, either as owner or mortgagee, has cost, forty-fivb city and borough councils, fifty- five counties and sixteen town boards, a total sum of £136,508 in six years. This was shown in a return presented to-day to | the Mimakau County Council, which has been compiling data on the question. It sent a circular letter to 120 boroughs, 125 counties and 65 town boards
