THe actiiig-Prime Minister (tlie-Hon J. G. Coates) to-day received a cablegram from the 'Premier (the Hon. G. W. Forbes'), in which the latter Says that Major Elliot’s Statement in tho House of Commons has apparently been misinterpreted.
Mr Forbes states: “Major Elliot definitely stated to =me that the trade position has ho hearing * whatever on the quota' proposal/ and • it is entirely a' matter of "interest to United' Kingdom farmers, who are srongly pressing for restrictions in the importation of butter and cheese •from abroad,' which is glutting the market, bearing down orices. ”
The treatment by New Zealand of British manufacturers so far as the tariff is concerned is considered to be fully satisfactory by British authorities, and has at no-time been .raised in connection with the discussions that, have taken place. .. . j
