NAZI PRISONERS

18,000 ESTIMATE

ALLEGED MURDER OF ESCAPEES.

(United Press Association —By Electric 'telegraph—Copyright.)

LONDON, July 12. “The Times’ ” Berlin correspondent says: “Curiosity regarding the number of prisoners in concentration camps has only partially been appeased by the making of an official announcement that there arc eighteen thousand, including twelve thousand in Prussia. An average estimate based on figures as to daily arrests since the Reichstag tiro would have been nearer one hundred thousand. The Nazi Minister of the Interior in Saxony, Herr Fritseh, recently boasted that there were twice as many prisoners in Saxony’s concentration camps as there were in Prussia’s, and also that there had been thousands of arrests in Bavaria and other states recently. Doctor 'Spiegel, a Jewish lawyer, was recently inarched by Nazis, barefooted, through the streets of Munich with a placard suspended from his neck, “I will never again complain to the police about tile Nazis! He ivas murdered “while attempting to escape from a concenratiou camp at Dachau.”

The “Daily Herald” says that the Nazis 'admit his death, but that the 'formula “while attempting to escape” is now regularly used to account for death of victims at concentration camps. Moreover, it eays, the Dachau camp is surrounded by electrified barbed wire, thus rendering escape impossible.

The Prussian Minister. of. the Interior- has now prohibited the circulation of 291 foreign newspapers, including live' British papers, thirtythree French, forty-eight Austrian, eleven Russian, and twelve United States ones.

The rsale in Germ'any of foreign newspapers, in the German language, printed abroad, lias' increased enormously during recent months, while the circulation of local papers has fallen heavily.
