AFTER BIG FISH
IN FIJI WATERS. LARGE TUNA CAUGHT. SUVA, - July 12. With ' the object of surveying the fishing possibilities of the Fiji waters Mr- ,R;- B.- Watson, of Matamata -ana the Ba : V of ; Islands, recently arrived in ■Suva- with ’-the motor launch Wanderer 11. ' which he brought down with him on the Waipahi. The expense of bringing the launch was met iby the Fiji Government, .'-with cvhom Mr Watson got • into communication .following articles in the' New Zealand Herald ■regarding the fishing in Fiji. iSi-ncfe his-arrival Mr W'afson, -accompanied- by Mr Holder, -a Bay of Islands "fisherman, ha s made several short trips- out .of Suva, and on one of these recently landed what is thought to be , n tuna. The fish weighed 1151 b. .and was approximately 6ft. in length- This fish appears to he a stranger"'to local fishermen, but the •consensus of .opinion is to the effect that.,-it . is- a tuna, whr h hitherto was not Known‘to exist in these'waters. Mr Walfcoh look- the . acting-Governqr on a fishing trip'on the lastjweek-end when they secured a good haul of, fair-sized fish. Swordfish are 'Mr Watson’s mission in Ei : i, and on this occasion they sighted one .near the Boat, but un fortunatelyUat the ftiime did mot have, any gear out. Mr Watson has left fox- the northern coast and will later go t« Tavfetini, where he intends to investigate ' thq possibilities of swordffshing.
