LOWEST CHARGES IN WORLD.

WELLINGTON, July 13
“New Zealand has the lowest telephone charges in the world,” Mr McNamara, secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department, reminded the New Zealand Farmers’ Union Conference in a letter last night.
Not only were the charges cheaper in New Zealand, but the Dominion was the third country in the world for density of telephones, being only exceeded by Canada and the United States. By an A~t of Parliament the Post and Telegraph Department was compelled to pays its profits into the consolidated fund, and last 1 year they had to hand over £20,000. To make a. reduction in 'telephone charges of fifteen per cent, would mean a loss of £274,000.
The Department lost op oil rural telephones erected, but the loss was made up ir 'be <4 ties.
