The Fire Brigade ball in the Soldiers’ Hall last night drew a good attendance and proved a very successful gathering. The hall had been tastefully decorated with coloured electric bulbs and greenery land lanumber of fire workers’ emblems and photographs. Capital music was provided by the. Happiness Boys orchestra. Messrs J. Coulson and H. Davdson having charge of the floor. The supper arrangements of the ladies’ committee were very complete. Dancing was continued till two o’clock, the scene being a very gay'one.
At the Greymouth .wharf yesterday there was the paradoxical position of an oil-burning steamer loading a cargo of coal, but the attention that the vessel attracted was not clue to that ract, but rather because of the painting of her hull. It is seldom that a vessel in the. West Coast' trade is white, but such is the Waipahi, which arrived yesterday from Auckland to ioad coal for return to that port. The xp.anation for her painting is that she has just been withdrawn from the Pacific Island trade, and has been lonimissioned on coastal service for the Union Company pending her return to the islands. Authority has been issued by the Main Highways Board for Matainui Creek bridge on the Detour road at Wataroa settlement. In addition to the main bridge adjacent to Thomson’s provision is made also for bridging the overflow near by, as well as providing ample waterway at the. main stream. This is considered necessary owing to the slow getaway on die downstream side of the proposed jridge. The estimated cast of the
