DEBUTANTES’ BALL

A BRILLIANT SPECTACLE.

BRIGHT FUNCTION LAST EVENING

The Soldiers’ Hall last night held .'the largest and (most representative gathering that has ever gathered in it, when the Westland Racing Club’s benefit ball took place. There were visitors present from all parts of the Coast. ' (Irevmouth being well represented and all round the country sent their quota. The hall had been brightly decorated with greenery' and coloured streamers, while lines of coloured, electric lamps round the hall added considerably to the gay appearance. A number ot typical racing pictures graced the walls. The floor was in capital order, but the assemblage was such a large one, over three hundred couples being present, ' that dancing room was at a premium, the onlookers encroaching 'more than two deep also round the room. Mr. W. ] A!. Jamieson was in charge of the floor and dancers had nothing to complain about in regard to delay, there being almost continuous dancing throughout the evening. Bright and tuneful music wag supplied, the first half being ■ mrmlied by the Black Hand Orchestra, ' t while the second half was provided by the Happiness Boys’ Orchestra. From eight o'clock onwards patrons . streamed into tlie hall and at 8.30 there was a record crowd, which continued to swell the assemblage rapidly. At. 9 o’clock promptly the Mayoress (Mi’s G. Perry) made her appearance, being escorted to the platform erected at the head of th'c hall by the President of the Racing Club (Mr J. J. Mclntosh), The Matrons of Honour (Mes dames If. Thompson and A. W. Yarrall) escorted ; by Mr F. McGregor, came next, followed by Mrs Stave ley, who was escorted by Mr T. Stuart. A presentation of a. handsome bouquet was then made to the Mayoress by Miss Alva. M c I n tosh. Then followed the debutantes, thirty, five in number, who walked in, lining the 'centre of the ball and making a graceful picture. Then followed their presentation to the Mayoress, each pve. senting her card to the Master of Ceremonies (Mr W. A. Jamieson) who made the announcement, following which the debutante made tier curtsey to the Mayoress, u'ho shook' hands and spoke a few' words to each, the young ladies receiving a hearty reception from the I pleased audience.

At the conclusion of the 'presentation M r J. J., Mclntosh 'on behalf of the Westland Racing Club, took the opportunity to express thanks to the Mayoress for the able and efficient manner in which she had received 1 the large Bevy of debutantes. They were the flowbr of Westland, and it spoke well for the district : when such a fine body of young womanhood could be gathered together. He congratulated the young ladies who had made their deh tit on their general appearance, which was .a most pleasing one and again thanked Mrs Perry for so graciously presiding over the pleasing .function. A flashlight photograph of semblage .and one of the debutantes and officials was then taken, following which the debutantes npd their escorts marched round the hall, a waltz in which they took part following.

Mrs G. A. Perry (the Mayoress) wore a dress of handsome wine burgundy lace over georgette. Mrs H. Thompson, the matron of honour, wore black satin with insets of cream lace, and a black georgette wrap.

Mrs W. Staveley, of Coromandel, who organised the presentation; Black chiffon velvet and ohantilly lace dress, end tiny velvet coat. Mies Alv.a Mclntosh, daugher of the president of the Club, who presented a dainty bouquet lo the Mayoress, wore black elephant crepe, with a silver sequin cape. THE DEBUTANTES The debutantes present were as follow : Mis s Greba Conning (Totara): Oyster satin frock, with cape trimmed with fur to match. Miss A. Growcott (Havelock North): White crepe-de-chine frock. White pony seal cape. Miss M. Cropper (Koiterangi) ; Lemo n and mauve crepe-de-chine frock with white pony seal coat. Miss Rona O’Donnell (Ros«): Blue georgette with long fitting bodice, inset with lace, and georgette cape attached,, fully flared skirt. Blue shoes 'and stockings, lemon mittens, and a lemon :P°syMiss F. Wells: Paste] green organdie. Miss Eileen Moore: White satin gored skirt with white lace, bodice. The bottom of the skirt and the neck were trimmed with white tulle. White lace mittens. White bouquet. Miss Olive Hurren : ,White crepe-dc-chine frock. Three frilled flounces form epaulette «!eevos. The gored skirt falling to the ankles from the high tight fitting bodice was relieved at the hem with tiny frills. AL pale n green chiffon velvet ccatcc completed, the ensemble. Miss Eileen Collett; A nalepmk organdie frock with a tight fitting bodice. finished with a tiny frill at nock and very .full, puff sleeves. The fully flared skirt had frilled godets. The waistline was finished with a sash and bow. A three frilled capo completed the outfit. Miss E. Denniston (Awatuna) : Cyclamen organdie frock made with a tight fitting bodice with flared skirt and tiny frills. A black velvet cape completer] the ensemble.

Miss Joyce Bavin (Araliura); White satin georgette, tight fitting, and trimmed with gold tri nun jugs. A georgette cape edged with white fur and gold velvet shoes to match. White lace

■Miss Annie Orr (Gveynw>uth) : Ivory ■crepe-de-chine frock with flares of silk lace, tight fitted into the bodice. Finished off with white tulle cape, shoes to tone, also posy and gloves. Miss Mary Shaw; Victorian frock ol powder blue organdie with a frilled bertha, finished in front with a dainty posy of pink, lemon and blue flowers. A fully flared iskirt finished with fril-s on hem.

Miss Nancy Yarrall: Flat white crepe frock made on long close fitting lines, and finished with a tiny shoulder cape edged with a -dainty scalloped frill.

Miss Phylli s , Andrews: White fro-ck of silk ilace over white silk, with small yoke -and puff sleeve s of fine net, finished with diamante ornament. Mittens and posy. Miss'lrene Shand : Wearing a. simple frock, of midnight blue georgette. The bodice extending below the hips had frilled epaulette sle° veS . The fluted iskirt in four snugly fitting panels was hemstitched to the bodice and falls fully around the ankles.
