When interviewed, Air 11. H. Sterling,. Chairman of the New Zealand Railways Board, explained ' to-day, regarding the taking on , .of ...an additional, staff at Otahuhu that this wa ft a usual occurrence at this time of the financial year. The programme! this year was somewhat more extensive than last year, due to the larger number of replacements being made, and improvements decided upon in V. the quantity and type of rolling' stock, particularly in. connection with'' trucks for the carriage of live '-stock and produce. The improvements of passenger carriages would also actively be pursued particularly in the direction cf removing longitudinal .scats, for second class cars, and substutiting chair seats. The increased activity would apply to Otahuhu and Addington, which. were two workshops at which tliis ; class of work was-done. :• ’!v: v .
